In October, CRT (Carbide Related Technologies, Inc.), the stocking US distributor for GCT GmbH, presented an evening seminar to PCB manufacturers in the Greater Chicago area. The subject of the seminar was the mechanical machining of IMS based on aluminum and copper.
Johann Schmidt from GCT discussed drilling and routing of IMS with diamond coated tools. He provided detailed process parameters and recommendations for different applications based upon provide field experience. Additional focus was given to product designs with ceramic dielectric. These have proven to most influence tool life and process parameters.
The topic of scoring aluminum was addressed by Mr. John Bella from Assured Quality Technologies, Inc. He provided practical process recommendations and parameters for IMS scoring applications. John’s presentation was based on a number of years of experience scoring IMS products in varying materials and thickness’.
The formal seminar was followed by discussions reviewing varying application and current process problems with IMS processing. Refreshments were served including Indian and local cuisine. The social part of the evening provided and opportunity to further discuss individual experiences and challenges.
